Spiritual Gifts: Not a Secret

I am constantly amazed at the number of Christians who are not aware of their spiritual giftedness. It motivates me, actually. I want to stand on the street corner, write a blog (ha!), tweet, whatever to educate believers about their spiritual gifts. They are not meant to be a secret!

Shhh...
Flikr
I am guessing there are a couple of reasons why this lack of knowledge exists:
1. Never thought about it
2. Not necessary to think about it
3. If I don't know my spiritual gifts, I don't have to use them.

Paul says in 1 Corinthians 12: 1, "Now about spiritual gifts, I do not want you to be ignorant." Thanks for cutting to the chase, Paul. In other words, Corinthian church, you are ignorant about them! Not only were they not informed about their individual gifts, but they had taken it on themselves to assign superiority to certain gifts.

Ok, so what about you? Do you know YOUR spiritual gifts? If you do know them, are you using them? Developing them? Or are you taking the easy way out, preferring not to know them so that you are free not to use them?

Friends, spiritual gifts give us the opportunity to glorify God, serve others, and build up the Body of Christ.  And they remind us that we have a special place of service within the Kingdom.

There is no one else who can do what God has called you to do like you do it. That's why He called you.

Next week I will provide an assessment for you folks that are not sure what your gifts are.  And then we will start looking at the gift descriptions.

In the mean time, PRAY that God would reveal how He has spiritually gifted you. ASK others in your life where they see fruit, and you will often find your gifts.
So, what comments or questions do you have that we can cover in weeks to come?

Unwrapping the spiritual gifts,

Kelli

I view spiritual gifts as a tool belt. God gives us what we need when we need it. I do have my primary gifts, but God will ask us to use those gifts we aren't as strong in to grow us. He recently had me taking dinner to those in need. Hospitality would be a lesser gift based on my strengths. But I've been so blessed by the chance to bless others in this way and there's no doubt I did this in Gods strength not my own.

Hi Kelli. Great post - thanks for sharing your passion on this subject. Sometimes I find that people now-a-days still assign superiority to certain gifts (maybe without even knowing it), that operating in certain giftedness is more acceptable than others, and even that some gifts only existed in 'Bible Times'. Is that something that you've observed too? Take for instance- the listing of gifts in 1 Cor 12: 7-11 (wisdom, faith, knowledge, healing, miraculous powers, prophecy, distinguishing between spirits, speaking in tongues, interpreting tongues, etc.). Often in ministry I observe that people are open to wise advice from someone, or receiving a home cooked meal, but when it comes to being healed by someone with the gift of healing, or receiving a prophetic word about their lives, it's as if their brains lock up. I think it's awesome that you're helping people unwrap their gifts. I'm sure there's probably not a simple answer to this question, but how do you think we teach others about the importance of ALL the gifts that bring unity and diversity to the body? How do we create an awareness of the gifts that many people are perhaps confused by?

Leslie, look for the assessment next week!

Sonya, I do agree that we have primary gifts, but that God equips us with whatever we need for the task at hand. Good words!

Alysa, We will talk about the superiority complex that some people assign to certain gifts and we will discuss the gifts and their existence now. We will also discuss that fact that all the gifts bring unity and diversity, maturity and stability to the body of Christ. So, stay tuned!

Great blog. I think it is wonderful you are writing about this; you are right,so many are unaware of their gifts. Therefore, they are not using what God gave them, or being as effective as God had purposed. I look forward to the coming blogs about this. I know I will learn even more! Blessings~

Great post. I love the "unwrapping spiritual gifts," idea. Without the use of them it's impossible to extend the incarnation of Jesus to a lost world or to the Body he uses to spread the Word.
Thanks, Kelli
